Bangladesh’s open source community has grown tremendously over the past decade. From a handful of enthusiasts in the early 2000s, we now have a vibrant ecosystem of contributors, organisations, and events dedicated to free and open source software.
The Early Days
When I first started contributing to Wikipedia in 2008, the concept of open source was relatively niche in Bangladesh. Most developers worked with proprietary tools, and the idea of contributing to global projects for free was seen as unusual.

The Rise of BdOSN
The Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) has been instrumental in growing awareness and participation. Through workshops, hackathons, and online communities, thousands of developers have been introduced to the world of open contribution.
What This Means Going Forward
The future is bright for open source in Bangladesh. With a young, tech-hungry population and improving internet infrastructure, Bangladesh is positioned to become a significant voice in global open source
